This question seems to be asked a lot. The most simplest answer is that you add the Adsense codes manually. If you have a blog on Blogger.com you have the option of them adding the Adsense codes for you. But if you want to do this yourself then you will actually have to go in the source of your site and add the adsense codes yourself.
For instance, take a good look at my own blog - The Adsense Consultant - and you will see that I have Adsense codes on the right side and after each blog post. How did I add the codes? Once I went through the process of deciding which sized ads and what color I wanted those ads to be I got the code for the ads. I copied and pasted them into the template of my blog. Of course it may take some trial and error of getting the adsense codes to look just right but seeing since you want to make the most of your adsense ads' placement then going through a little trial and error won't hurt. In fact it may even help you for when you want to tweak your Adsense ads for better earnings potential.
Now I do have Adsense ads on some webpages and the basic process is the same. After I have gone through the same process that I mentioned above I just copy and paste my adsense codes into the website at exactly where I want the Adsense ads to appear.
Now I'll let you judge for yourself - How do the Adsense Ads look on my blog?
Blog Consultant? Yes that is what I am! So many people are having so many problems with their blogs and their Adsense accounts that I decided to become a consultant and show my expertise - LOL!

Don't Try To Trick The Adsense People!
Adsense has rules as to how many adsense ads you can have per page. You can have 3 text link ad blocks, 3 links blocks and 2 refferals.
If you try to put more than this on your page you will only get the number of ad blocks allowed per page. I don't know what kind of software or coding Adsense uses but it is very astute and it will know if you place more ads than is allowed per page.
One very good example that has been brought up a lot is the fact that a lot of people would like to put their Adsense ads between the posts in their blog. Well since you are allowed only so many Adsense ad blocks no matter how many times you put the coding in you will still only get those number of ad blocks that are allowed.
I know that its very tempting once you start to get a taste of that Adsense money coming in to do things to increase your revenue but you don't want to run the risk of being banned from Adsense and being banned from using the Adsense program!

Adding The Adsense Codes(s)
To be quite honest I add the adsense codes manually by using the "Notepad" program. I have been creating and editing websites for so long that I don't need a big program to do minor editing.
In the case of my blogs it has to do with how my layout is set up. If I have the older template version of my blog then I can just go in and add the codes manually. But if I have Blogger's new template version then that gets a little bit more complicated. But to make a long story short I am still able to add the codes after I go through a few steps.
While others may feel comfortable with letting Blogger add the adsense codes, I'd rather do it myself manually.
